Moving On With God

This one is personal.

Moving On With God

In the past few weeks, I have had multiple conversations that basically point to “a lack of confidence in making decisions which point to huge life change”. This runs the gamut of what career do I go with? Where do I live? Do I stay with this girl? Should I give up this sin?

At the end of the day, we make our own choices (due to free will) and its often many prior choices that have a huge impact on the choices we are facing now.

Last month, I moved our family from our home of San Antonio, to my hometown of Lubbock, TX after having lived there 3+ years with a solid base of friends. In fact, some of our best family friends. It has easily been the most difficult decision to make. Now you may be wondering, why even make that decision? What is the purpose behind it?

Well publicly we stated it was to help pay off debt and we’d have family support. But internally, there was also a lot crumbling around us. From church leadership that no longer had our best interest at heart, to the death of our children’s caretaker - It began to feel like the support systems we had built up time and time again had began to fade and it was time to pivot.

When we began seeking out what was next, I had an uncanny experience with the Lord that led me to believe Lubbock was the correct move for our next phase in life. (Even though I had sworn off the city since moving away when I was 18.)

Following that experience, I spoke to my greatest confidant and friend, my wife, and we made the decision that Lubbock was the next step. After which, things began to fall in place. The house we needed was made available in an uncanny way, the pain of finances to cover the move were squashed and taken care of, people made time to say goodbye and friends came to assist us in the carnage that is moving across state.

I’m confident in saying the Lord made the way, but only after the decision was made. To me, it felt like He sought obedience and then worked the plans together.

After having more of these conversations with people, I wanted to share a few verses that God says about making decisions and moving on that I discovered during this season. (I don’t personally have any answers on what you need to do. These are just insights I gleaned and resources I used to actually guide my decision making.)

Philippians 3:13-14
13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:26-28
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27  And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. 28  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Jeremiah 29:11-13
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

In the vein of making difficult decisions, I met with Jonathan Armbruster last month and he walked through the very difficult decision of starting his own business after having built someone else’s company for so many years.

It may have been a difficult decision, but God was right there in the middle of it all along.
