What Does Giving God Your Career Mean?

This isn’t just about behavior. It’s about identity.

Stewarding More than Sunday: Giving God Your Career Too

Stewardship is often associated with tithing or financial giving, but its meaning runs far deeper. At its core, stewardship is the act of managing something that doesn’t belong to you, not just your money, but your time, your talents, your relationships, and yes, even your career. As believers, we’re called to recognize that everything we have belongs to God, and we’re entrusted to manage it faithfully for His purposes.

This isn’t just about behavior. It’s about identity.

“You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price”
(1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

“We own nothing, and yet we have everything”
(2 Corinthians 6:10).

These verses are more than poetic. They are a radical reframe of how we live and lead. But if we’re going to live this way, we must start from a place of relationship. You can’t steward well if you don’t stay closely connected to the One you’re stewarding for.

That means regular prayer, honest confession, listening, and obedience. It means inviting God into the boardroom, the breakroom, the email thread, and even our LinkedIn profiles.

A recent phone call with a fellow Christian marketplace leader reminded me just how hard this is in real life. We talked about the fear of being "too open" about our faith at work or online. The fear of offending someone, or worse, limiting our future opportunities.

I’ve felt that too, compartmentalizing my faith into my “off hours” to keep things safe. But God’s been challenging me through that, reminding me that if I trust Him with my eternity, why wouldn’t I trust Him with my career?

“Am I now trying to win the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10).

Ouch. That hits hard. (That was important, read it again.) But it also clarifies everything.

If God owns it all, then our job isn’t just a job. It’s a Kingdom assignment; a place He has entrusted to us to shine His light and reflect His character. That doesn’t necessarily mean preaching at coworkers or pushing faith in ways that feel unnatural. But it does mean asking God how He wants you to show up, and what kind of steward He’s calling you to be in your current role.

I had to ask myself: Am I managing my job the way I manage my money? Have I truly surrendered my career path to Him, or am I just asking for His blessing on the path I chose?

The starting point is simple but powerful: Ask God to open your eyes. Ask Him how He wants you to steward your position. Then listen. And obey.

None of us do this perfectly, and we’re not meant to walk it out alone. Scripture reminds us, “Two are better than one... If either of them falls down, one can help the other up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10). And in Hebrews 10:24, we are encouraged to “think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.”

Community and accountability matter. Whether in person or virtually, connecting with other believers, especially those in the workplace, gives us courage to keep going. We’re called to gently encourage, challenge, and sharpen one another as we grow.

So, if you’re feeling stuck, uncertain, or alone in how to live this out, know that you're not. There are people walking this same path who would love to support you. If you'd like help finding Christ-centered resources or connections, I’d be honored to hear from you.
